CASE STUDY 1
IM’s client commissioned the advisory to locate for him several pieces of art to complete his 1960s nonconformist art collection. The particular of works sought by the client were then unavailable for sale at auction or via galleries.
What IM did
IM used its network in Russia to get in touch with private collectors of the period and accompanied the client on a 5 day visit to Moscow to view the works and visit other top collections of his period. The trip has also included cultural programme, museum and theatre visits.
The client was able to select and acquired 13 new works for his collection. IM performed end-to-end service, due diligence, gathering and confirming provenance and history of the paintings, assessing condition, conducting purchase and sale negotiations, and managed international payments. IM obtained export and import documentation on behalf of the client, and arranged international shipment of the works.
CASE STUDY 2
Research and Cataloguing for Private Collector
One of IM's regular clients got in touch with a request to assist in the research and cataloguing of several works of their European art collection for inclusion in the printed publication. The selection of works for research was eclectic combination of well known and lesser known artists, with incomplete cataloguing, many lacking dating, provenance and/or literature.
What IM did
IM researched each individual work accessing literature and catalogue raisonnés, available at V&A, London. We contacted the artists’ gallery representatives, where applicable, to request additional information. Some titles were corrected to match the historical facts of where the artist lived and worked and where possible the date or period of execution was specified. Some additional provenance information was found.
IM was able to correct and detail information on the artists and works in the collection using stylistic and art historical research. The research increased the monetary value of the paintings, in some cases adding new historical value, and enhanced the client’s enjoyment of his collection.
CASE STUDY 3
Acquiring for Investment
A new client contacted IM with a request to advise on buying contemporary art for investment purposes within a specified budget. The client was new to art buying and wished to locate the works that would satisfy his aesthetic preferences, fit within the budget and present an investment opportunity.
What IM did
The proposed budget framed the search criteria: to acquire works by emerging and mid-career contemporary artists with established exhibition track-record and a clear potential for the future growth. Using our trade network, IM selected several appropriate artists, ranging from emerging to the more firmly established.
IM identified a work by an established, but undervalued artist from a main stream movement of Arte Povera, who was about to have a major retrospective exhibition at MoMA in New York. In addition, the artist was uniquely positioned as the only female painter within the Arte Povera movement. All of which indicated a great investment potential for the future.
The client acquired the work recommended by IM and continues to build their existing portfolio to include emerging artists with IM.
